Open Letter:
Let's Talk, Sir
Kurt G., Gunnery Sergeant, USMC, Retired
[Excerpt]
"Immediately and without hesitation, you took the side of our enemy
and condemned those Marines... and by doing so, you have emboldened
and strengthened the terrorists' cause. To me, that is worse than
treason... it is betrayal of a very personal kind...."
"Play politics all you want... attack your political opponents as you
see fit... but, for God's sake, leave the Marine Corps out of your
politics. On behalf of the Marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen
serving our country
now... please stop attacking our military..."

Murtha: Knave* of the week
Washington Times
"Knaves: Rep. John Murtha, who tried to back away from anti-American
comments he made last month." –
Washington Times, June 8, 2006
per
Merriam-Webster online dictionary: KNAVE: a tricky
deceitful fellow
[EXCERPT from June 8, 2006 article]
On June 24, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Mr. Murtha
told a townhall meeting in Miami that the "American presence in Iraq
is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea
or Iran." Newspapers across the country, including this one, as well
as columnists, bloggers and pundits criticized Mr. Murtha based on the
Sun-Sentinel's article. Mr. Murtha, however, said he was misquoted and
succeeded in soliciting a retraction from the Sun-Sentinel's editors.
But despite the Sun-Sentinel's backtracking, the initial
characterization of Mr. Murtha's comments was correct, as a video of
the town hall meeting makes clear.
Here's what Mr. Murtha actually said: "Every one of our allies think
that the United States being in Iraq is more dangerous to world
stability and world peace, every one of our allies; Great Britain,
every single country... They think it's more, uh, we're more dangerous
to world peace than North Korea or Iran. That says something."
Mr. Murtha contends that since he was only citing polling data, it was
incorrect for the Sun-Sentinel to attribute the belief that America is
more dangerous than North Korea or Iran to him. Of course this begs
the question of why Mr. Murtha, had he disagreed with "every one of
our allies," cited their opinions in the first place. Watching the
video, it is clear which side Mr. Murtha is taking (e.g., the side of
America's critics), making the Sun-Sentinel's original reporting of
the meeting an honest summation of his comments taken in context.
Mr. Murtha should have the courage to stand behind his words. He
doesn't, which is why he's this week's Knave.

Murtha's hometown paper:
runs anti-Murtha column on 7th,
puff piece on the 9th
June 9, 2006...Rep. John Murtha's hometown newspaper has the following
news article on its internet homepage:
[EXCERPT:]
Will Murtha’s Iraq stance hinder
his re-election bid?
June 9, 2006...U.S. Rep. John Murtha understands he has become
a lightning rod for his controversial and uncharacteristic
outspokenness against the war in Iraq.
But Murtha, D-Johnstown, says he believes troops will begin being
redeployed before the November election, a move that will allow him to
refocus on jobs, health care and economic development closer to home
in his bid for re-election.
“It’ll still be an issue in the fall. It just won’t be as much of an
issue,” Murtha said in an interview with The Tribune-Democrat. [LINK

The article descends from there into a predictable puff piece on
Murtha. That's not particularly interesting. But the timing of
this puff piece is of interest.
Why? Because just two days prior, this very same newspaper – the
Johnstown Tribune-Democrat – published this scathingly
anti-Murtha column, written by regular monthly columnist, Pedro Vega:
[EXCERPT:]
Use Somalia lessons to guide Iraq policy
June 7, 2006... Since U.S. Rep. John Murtha started his demands
last November for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, I’ve
waited for him to describe in detail his force “redeployment” plan in
the context of regional tensions and of the global war on terror.
It has been nearly eight months since he started the controversy and
he still has not provided any substantive, concrete details justifying
a policy change to that effect.
None appear to be forthcoming.
Murtha has failed to heed the Somalia lesson. In 1993, he urged
President Clinton to withdraw troops from Somalia, using arguments
very similar to those he uses today to justify our withdrawal from
Iraq. In September of that year, Murtha stated during a television
interview, “Our welcome has been worn out,” that Clinton had been
“listening to our suggestions” and “I think you’ll see him move those
troops out very quickly.”
Sound familiar?
Our hasty withdrawal from Somalia emboldened terrorists to attack
the U.S. homeland. Osama bin Laden cited the withdrawal from
Somalia as a victory for Islamist forces and an example for militants
to follow when he “declared war” against the United States in 1996.
Bin Laden said:
“But your most disgraceful case was in
Somalia … However, when tens of your solders were killed in minor
battles and one American pilot was dragged in the streets of
Mogadishu, you left the area carrying disappointment, humiliation,
defeat and your dead with you. Clinton appeared in front of the whole
world threatening and promising revenge, but these threats were merely
a preparation for withdrawal. You have been disgraced by Allah and you
withdrew; the extent of your impotence and weaknesses became very
clear. …”
